Cricket!

TroughtonYesterday I had a cultural experience that was entirely new to me – I went to watch a Twenty20 match at Edgbaston. My husband is a member, and frequently extols the pleasures of cricket, so I thought it was time to give it a go. I would love to be able to say something intelligent about the game itself (Warwickshire against the Somerset Sabres) but the best I can do is to say that Warwickshire won by one run, it was very close and I got quite excited by it! (You can read a proper report about it here!) I’m still working on actually understanding cricket, although I have concluded it’s basically like rounders, but more complicated. Still, the atmosphere is friendly, I read some of the Sunday paper, chatted to friends and actually enjoyed myself rather more than I expected. Cricket, I’m beginning to think, is strangely hypnotic, and sitting there for three hours was relaxing, though I’m not sure how long I could sit there for, but I suspect I’ll be going there again!

  1. There are few better ways to spend a sunny couple of hours than in the company of friends and wife at the cricket – a very good game for your first visit to Warwickshire County Cricket Club.
